How to buy a VPS with Bitcoin

A checkout path that actually completes: pick the host for your threat model, pay BTC or Lightning, skip processors that want a selfie.

1. Decide what “buy VPS with BTC” has to mean

Card-free is the easy version: a reseller invoices you in Bitcoin and provisions DigitalOcean or Hetzner behind the scenes. No-KYC is stricter: no government ID at the host or the processor. Anonymous signup is stricter still: no legal name, sometimes no email. Pick one before you compare prices. Mixing them is how people land on Vultr, pay BitPay, and get asked for a credit card anyway.

2. Prefer the invoice, not the brand

Read the payment line on the provider page. BTCPay Server, LND, SHKeeper, Heleket, BitCart, and “direct BTC Core” mean the host is likely paid on their own stack. NOWPayments, CoinGate, Cryptomus, and Plisio are fine for convenience and often speak Lightning, but they are third parties. BitPay and Coinbase Commerce are KYC-prone. If the notes say BitPay, assume identity friction.

3. Use Lightning when the plan is small

A 50k sat on-chain fee on a $7 VPS is a bad trade. Lightning invoices settle in seconds, which also reduces the window where a host can “lose” an underpaid on-chain send. If LN is unavailable, a single on-chain payment to a fresh host address still works — just wait for the confirmations they publish.

4. Place the order like a grown-up

  • Unique email alias if they require email.
  • SSH key, not a password they email in the clear if you can avoid it.
  • Pay the exact invoice; do not reuse an old address.
  • Save the invoice ID until the panel shows active.
  • Test SSH, then enable the firewall before you install anything noisy.

5. What this guide will not do

It will not tell you how to hide criminal infrastructure. Buying a server with Bitcoin is ordinary. Abuse, spam, and TOS-banned content get servers yanked at almost every host in the directory, including the ones with “bulletproof” in the name. Read the notes for Tor exit policy if that is actually what you need.
